To transmit data over a fiber optic network, you must first convert electrical impulses into an optic signal. The receiver, to understand the information, and to use it, requires a reverse transformation. Modern high-speed and long-haul telecommunication networks are based on optical technologies.
Hundreds of meters and kilometers of data need to be transmitted and received. To do this, you need to buy an SFP transceiver, i.e. a miniature transformer module enclosed in a metal body.
Transceivers vary considerably by types and characteristics. Most common standard now is SFP, as well as the later SFP+, to which SFP modules can also be connected. SFP module capabilities
They all look standard from the outside, almost identical. On one side of the oblong metal body there is a connection outlet. It is used to install modules into network equipment. The other, enclosed by a protective plug, contains transmitter and photo slots.
They are connected to an optics cable or twisted pair in case the transmitter and receiver are designed according to RJ-45 standard.
A switch or router equipped with an SFP port for a transceiver features great opportunities:
- it can be connected by optical cable to a remote by more than a hundred meters network segment without amplifiers;
- it can be connected to the Internet provider via optic fiber without subscriber modem or media converter;
- it can change failed modules in hot swap mode;
- it can monitor operation of optical modules;
- it can increase bandwidth as well as channel range.

Diversity of transceiver world
Technically, SFP modules differ by a number of characteristics.
- they can be designed for single-mode optical cable or multimode one;
- have connectors not only for optics, but also of RJ-45 type for twisted pair;
- receive and transmit on one or two fibers;
- use different wavelengths;
possess spectral sealing technologies which greatly improve technical capability and range of signal transmission.
In order to make a connection to the transceiver it is necessary to terminate optical cable as standard. There are two options: SC and LC. The second one was created by Lucent, an improved version of the first one. It is more compact, with a convenient unlatching device.
Today, the trend towards ubiquitous use of LC-type connectors has prevailed. Although it is not against any Ethernet standards to apply an "old" connection (SC).
