As periods in history of computing have changed, different technologies have emerged for storing information on magnetic tape. Memory devices changed markedly. 

Change has also taken place in terms of their consumer qualities. Today, such devices are called streamers. 

Their design limits the very principle of their operation. It's a serial access storage device, and in some ways it's similar to household tape recorders. 

Streamers are typically used in data backup, archiving and storage. Unlike tape libraries and downloaders, they do not have storage compartments for tape cartridges.
