Efficient drive

Storage, backup copying to cartridges has many advantages. Tape has many advantages over hard as well as laser (optical) disks. Among them

power efficiency:- they do not need a power source for storage;

security:– attacker will not be able to read contents without connecting the reader, while hard drive, for example, is almost permanently in the computer;

reliability: – Write or read error is by 4-5 orders of magnitude less likely in case of tape than in case of hard drives.

Over decades of development of magnetic recording technology tape drives have undergone many changes. Right now, they constitute drives that share same tape reel.

If mounted on a reader or writer tape will be fed to the magnetic heads automatically. Same as optical drives they have their own abbreviation for overwriting capability.
